Skype for Linux gets an update after almost 15 months

Skype for Linux download page

Proving how much it cares about those people who use its app on Linux, Skype has released version 2.2 for Linux. Don't run towards the champagne though, as this is still a beta version, and, as its minor revision number implies, isn't the much-awaited big new version that achieves feature parity with its Windows and Mac brethren.

It's only been what, almost 15 months since the last Skype beta for Linux? Well, during this time, Skype's main focus has clearly been improving its Linux app, since the new version fixes the amazing number of 49 bugs. It also brings 23 'improvements', and yet somehow still manages to have a fair share of 'known issues'. Exciting, no?

What is perhaps the most important feature addition here is the support for Skype Access. This lets you easily connect to paid Wi-Fi hotspots across the globe while paying for them with Skype credit. Skype for Linux has also received support for call waiting and holding, as well as easy conference hosting. Audio and video quality have been boosted (hopefully in a way that's going to be noticeable in day-to-day use), and some of the languages have been updated.

Adobe Flash Player 11.1 coming to the Galaxy Nexus by end of year

Adobe Flash

Adobe's been saying this for a week or so now, and today it made it officially official in an official blog post: Flash Player 11.1 will come to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Huzzah. Look for the update in December (makes since, because November's 24 hours from being in our rear-view mirrors).

Glad to see another one last update for Flash Player (and AIR as well, which we're already seeing in the Android Market) for the Galaxy Nexus. Now if only we could get the phone in North America.

Nanoparticle Monster Batteries Could Make Wind and Solar Power More Practical

Researchers at Stanford University have used nanoparticles of copper hexacyanoferrate to create electrodes that could lead to large batteries for storing excess power from the electrical grid for future use. These might be best used in wind and solar farms, the researchers stated in a paper published recently.

PCIe 4.0 inches towards reality, hits 16 gigatransfers per second (that's a thing, right?)

PCIe 4.0
Don't get too excited just yet, but PCIe 4.0 is coming. PCI-SIG, the body that governs the standard, has announced the next evolution of the interface, which should start popping up in servers, desktops, laptops and even tablets around 2015. Sadly, details are pretty slim on the slot -- final specs aren't expected to be announced before 2014. All we know is that PCIe 4.0 will be able to perform 16 gigatransfers per second (GT/s), which tells us only slightly more than jack squat. It simply means that a PCIe 4.0 card will be capable of transferring 16 billion discrete chunks of data per second, twice that of PCIe 3.0. What that doesn't tell us though, is the size of those chunks. If they're the same size, 4.0 will provide double the current bit rate of 1 GB/s per-lane. If, for some reason, the channel width were halved there would be no speed increase -- but we seriously doubt that's the case. So, will we be looking at 32 GB/s PCIe 4.0 x16 GPUs in a few years? That is a definite maybe.

Gmail Contacts auto-save can now be disabled plus myriad of small updates

Gmail auto-contact settings
The Gmail team has been busy behind the scenes of late addressing a plentiful supply of little niggles. First up on the chopping block is the annoying (or amazing, depending on how you look at it) auto-save contacts feature, which has been the bane of many-a-contact neat-freak (myself included) since its inception. Now Google has finally added an option to turn off the auto-save contacts feature. It's available in the 'General' tab of Gmail settings going forward, and should please anyone who syncs their phone contacts with Gmail contacts.

Gmail will also now point out any incorrectly entered email addresses visually, rather than simply telling you something was wrong. This will be handy for anyone addressing emails to a long list of recipients, as it'll be a lot easier to spot the typo. A few of Gmail's error messages have also migrated from pop-ups to in-window messages that allow you to action things more easily, while still getting on with the task in hand. Gmail will also now send you back to the message you were looking at if you happen to create a filter for 'messages like these,' a nice tweak that should save you some time.

If you're into your keyboard shortcuts, Gmail now has one turned on by default and that's the shortcut help key. Hit 'shift' and '?' together and you'll be presented with an overlay detailing all the keyboard shortcuts available to boost your productivity. Last but not least, the 'refresh' link is now a button on to match the rest of the buttons on the toolbar. Consistency in UI is important for a decent user experience, and now Gmail conforms just a little bit more.

To check out these little changes, all you have to do is head to your Gmail and have a look around the UI. Many people rely daily on Gmail in the browser, and these small, but important changes, can make the difference between a slick and productive experience, and a sluggish and frustrating one.

'Glee'-Cap: All About The Ladies

Santana accepts her sexuality on 'I Kissed a Girl' episode.
By Jim Cantiello

Mark Salling and Damian McGinty on "Glee"
Photo: FOX

Tuesday night's "Glee" episode was titled "I Kissed a Girl," and while it didn't show any lady-smooching, it did feature oodles of songs written by women for women. In the process, Santana slowly learned to accept her sexuality, an unlikely troublemaker was caught stuffing the class president ballot boxes, Puck turned down sex with "crazy" Quinn, and Coach Beiste made her singing debut with Dolly Parton's "Jolene," inspired by Sue Sylvester stealin' her man.

Since "I Kissed a Girl" was all about the ladies, it felt right that the latest musical "Glee"-Cap was inspired by beloved lesbian duo Indigo Girls. Check out the video in the embedded player below and sing along with these lyrics.

She's tough as nails but doesn't want you to see
That she's into she's
Her singing friends accept her
And protect her
From pr---s who play rugby

Get your Lilith Fair on for Santana
She wants peaches, not bananas
It was tragic
Abuelita don't like sapphic
But whatevs, in the next scene Santana seemed A-OK ...

Kurt's scared he'll lose the election
So Rachel stuffs the ballots
Suspended for a week
Two fight for Puck's erection
Shelby wins, but then did Puck completely freaks
Huh?!

I'm confused with all these changes
Why are motives re-arranges?
It's like the writers re-boot every beat
A screenplay ctl+alt+del
The only constant is the amount of food Beiste eats

Thank the "Glee" gods for our Klaine, though
Yay to their duet, but credits GTFO
Now that Kurt's not class president
He still has yet to make a dent
On his college résumé, but maybe next year now
He'll have to stay
And live with Blaine
I won't complain
There goes my brain

Squeeeeeee!

Their "F****** Perfect" was f---ing perfect.

What did you think of this week's episode? Let us know in the comments!

Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey, and the Argument Women's MMA Can't Stop Having

Filed under:

Strikeforce 135-pound women's champ Miesha Tate doesn't think it's fair for Ronda Rousey to leverage her looks into a title shot, and she's got a point.

Rousey thinks that, when it comes to selling a fight and getting MMA fans interested in what's happening with the women's division, fair doesn't enter into it. She's also got a point.

It's an argument that -- especially among female MMA fighters -- isn't new and isn't unique. The fact is, when you're trying to scratch out a living in the women's division of a sport marketed primarily to young men, it helps to be pretty. It might not be fair, and it might not be right, but we need only look at who's getting paid and who's getting ignored to know that, at least for now, it's the way things are.

But watching Tate and Rousey present their respective sides of the issue while my colleague Ariel Helwani struggled to get a word in, I couldn't help but wonder if it's always going to be this way, and whether we'll ever stop arguing over it. And if we don't, is that necessarily such a bad thing?

To be fair, this particular iteration of the argument isn't as simple as beauty versus the beast. You might look at Rousey and see Judo Barbie, but there's more to her than just eye candy. For starters, she's an Olympic bronze medalist. If you want to hear about that, just ask her. If you don't want to hear about it, fine, but she'll probably tell you anyway, and who can blame her?

Sure, she's only had four pro fights in MMA, but none of them have been even the least bit competitive. You could call her career one long armbar clinic, except that a) it hasn't even been that long, and b) any clinic that injures that many people isn't going to get a whole lot of repeat customers.

Still, Rousey knows what she's doing. She's attractive, she's got an attitude, and she's using both to get herself noticed. When Tate told her, "If you weren't pretty, it wouldn't matter what you said or didn't say," she's probably right. But then, is that so wrong?

If Tate thinks so, she must have come around to that conclusion pretty recently. Seems like she's had no problem playing up her own good looks when it served her purposes (exhibit A: the background of her Twitter page). Then again, as Tate pointed out, she also won a bunch of fights. Being good-looking is, as she tells it, "just a bonus" for a female fighter, since at the end of the day each woman still has to acquit herself in the cage, where a pretty face won't help you.

But then, the problem for women's MMA hasn't been a lack of skill from the fighters -- it's a lack of interest from the fans. For whatever reason, a lot of the same people who love to see two men beat each other up just aren't into watching two women do the same thing. I don't know why that is, honestly, and I'm not sure it matters. You can tell people that they should like and support women's MMA. You can tell them they're a bunch of jerks if they only want to see pretty girls fighting. That might make a few people feel bad about themselves, but it won't create many new fans.

You know what will, though? Stuff like this Tate-Rousey rivalry. Already it's produced what might be the best segment in MMA Hour history (no offense to "The Mitrione Minute"). For the first time in a long time, the MMA world is buzzing about women's MMA. And, contrary to how it might seem on the surface, it's not their looks that's driving the interest (though, okay, it doesn't hurt). Really, it's the argument over their looks and over how much it matters, and it's the same argument women's MMA has been having with itself for years.

It shouldn't be enough to be pretty. I don't just mean in MMA, either. Whether you're a man or a woman, good looks might be a minor win in the genetic lottery, but they don't make you a good or talented or even worthwhile person. We know this, even if we don't always act like it. To give a good-looking person special considerations just because we like looking at their face is embarrassingly dumb, not to mention unfair. That's why it makes for such a fascinating internal conflict for a women's division that's still struggling with its own identity.

No one wants to see women's MMA become a sideshow where untalented, untrained pretty girls fight it out in sports bras for the sexual satisfaction of a caveman crowd. At least, I hope no one wants that, and if they do there are websites specifically for them (I've heard there are, anyway). At the same time, just as in the men's division, promote-ability matters. Brock Lesnar got a title shot after three fights -- which, in retrospect, still seems insane -- because he sold tickets and pay-per-views.

Some fans and fighters might want to see MMA become an egalitarian utopia where none of that matters, but in the meantime promoters still have to market their product to the world that is rather than the world that could or should be.

The good news is, MMA has a built-in lie detector to keep anyone from skating by on looks or attitude or popularity for too long, and that's the same for the women as it is for the men. If you can't fight, we'll find out soon enough. Eventually some ugly, boring person will punch you in the face until you can't stand up, and that will be that. Facial symmetry might be a useful gift, but it doesn't hold up too well in a sport that allows elbow strikes on the ground.

By forcing this discussion, both Tate and Rousey have done women's MMA a favor, whether either of them realize it or not. As much as female fighters love to frame their sport as a battle for attention and respect that they're all waging together, they don't always act in their own self-interest. It doesn't help them at all to be nice or to be friends or even to be fair to one another. What helps them is selling fights. What helps them -- just as it helps the men -- is getting fans interested in what's about to happen a few Saturday nights from now.

That's the business of fighting. As Josh Barnett likes to say, the business of fighting has very little to do with actual fighting, but that doesn't mean it isn't important. This conflict -- trying to give fans what they want but without losing your identity or self-respect in the process -- might turn out to be an ongoing and inescapable struggle for women's MMA. And maybe that's okay. In a sport that's all about conflict in its various forms, you could do a lot worse than have public arguments that lead to publicized fights.

Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

opera 11.10 battery power
Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions -- like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements -- and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you're running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you're seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

Google demands veto on OEM Android changes, stretches definition of 'open source'

Google, according to reports from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the 'final' code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That's all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign 'non-fragmentation clauses.' This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they're unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android -- which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors -- and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft's Bing instead of Google search.

Exclusive Interview: Wedding Bells Next For Cancer-Stricken Ethan Zohn

ezohnweb1_wide.jpg
It?s been nearly a decade since they fell in love through their mutual wins on Survivor, and now, Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca are finally ready to say ?I do?! ?We?re looking forward to bigger goals that don?t involve cancer, like marriage,? Jenna tells In Touch, despite the long road ahead for Ethan, which includes a new form of chemotherapy and another stem-cell transplant.

The couple is admirably optimistic about the future. ?We?re the type of people who dwell on the negative for just a short time, then flip it around,? Ethan says. ?I?m going to have to be a warrior!? Flipping it around for Ethan and Jenna means maintaining their healthy lifestyle, completing the NYC marathon and working out at New York?s Warrior Fitness Boot Camp, where they demonstrated their moves for In Touch. ?We do partner exercises and sweat together,? Ethan says. ?It brings you closer. I have her back, and she has mine.? With his ?rock? Jenna by his side through it all, Ethan?s determined not to lose hope. ?I?m focused on staying alive,? he bravely says. ?I want to take advantage of every moment I have.?

And though it seems there?s nothing they can?t conquer, the former model isn?t so sure the couple is ready to tackle parenthood. Says Jenna, ?I would like to start with a dog!?

3DS system update pushed back to December 8th, Nintendo confirms

November is just about over and 3DS users are still without that firmware update announced last month. They needn't worry, though, because Nintendo says it's on the way. In a statement posted to its site yesterday, the company confirmed that the refresh "is in the final stages of internal testing," and that it will be released by December 8th -- not the end of November, as previously indicated. When it finally hits, users will be able to record 3D video, access new StreetPass games, and transfer data across their 3DS systems. These all sound like good things, but they'll only come to those who wait.

Moom for Mac simplifies window moving and zooming

Moom for Mac

Moom
is a Mac utility that aims to simplify the task of moving and sizing windows. Moom can run in three different modes, seen in the image above. The Standard mode will make Moom have a Dock icon as well as menu items in the menu bar. In Menu Bar mode, Moom will only show up in your menu bar, and in the Faceless mode you won't see any sign of its existence at all -- unless you hover over the green zoom button in any window, which is when Moom starts working its magic.

Moom has two ways in which it can be operated -- by using the mouse or the keyboard. Using the mouse, after you've hovered over the aforementioned green zoom icon, a Moom menu will pop-up (above left). From there you can select if you want the current window zoomed to full screen, or if it should only occupy the left or right half of the screen, or even the top or bottom half if you're feeling saucy. The arrow-like icon allows you to revert the window to its original position.

But wait, there's more! If you drag the width/height icons a few pixels instead of just clicking on them, they're transformed into even more options, allowing you to zoom the current window to a(ny) quarter of the screen. How exactly does this work? To make the window occupy the top left quarter, you drag the 'left half' icon up, and to assign it to the bottom left quarter, you drag the 'left half' icon down.

Keyboard mode lets you control Moom with a global hotkey and the arrow buttons. You can set any key combination to be your global Moom hotkey, and set any subsequent key press to do any action that Moom can accomplish. Using the keyboard also gives you the option of centering a window, something which can't yet be done with the mouse. Hit the jump for a screenshot of the entire keyboard shortcut configuration menu to admire the amazing number of ways in which you can customize your interactions with Moom. Last, but definitely not least, you can rest assured knowing that Moom does support multiple displays.

Moom works for 100 uses in its free demo mode, after which you can purchase it either directly from Many Tricks (the developer), or from the Mac App Store. The license costs $5.

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

windows 8 app store
Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft's wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today's installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We've got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed -- and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We're also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio -- the game's actual publisher.

It's still early, of course, so it's entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple's legal eagles at bay.
