Outlook.com preview: Microsoft reinvents its online email offerings

Maybe you heard, but Microsoft launched a new email service today. No, not Hotmail -- a completely new, built-from-scratch service. This is Outlook.com, and for the time being, at least, it will exist separately from Hotmail. So why didn't Redmond just give Hotmail a drastic overhaul? Well, friends, there are two explanations. First, the polite one: for technical reasons, the engineers found it easier to build a new service from scratch rather than retrofit the old one. The frank answer: Microsoft is keenly aware Hotmail has a bad rap, thanks to those banners and flashy video ads. In fact, the company has been very candid that it wants not just to compete with Gmail, but siphon away some of its growing user base. As such, Outlook offers a fresh, minimal interface -- far cleaner than Hotmail ever looked. What's more, the ads are more pared-down here: no video adverts, and no targeted ads on messages between people (newsletters are still fair game).

The service is open to the public as of today and you get virtually unlimited storage, along with 7GB of SkyDrive space if you create a new Microsoft account. (Microsoft uses the word "virtually" to hedge itself against spammers who might otherwise use limitless storage to game the system.) And you should take our word when we say it's worth giving the service a shot: we've been testing it for almost two weeks. ?She was crying and begging him to reconsider,? says the insider, who says she even blurted out, ?You?re the one I want to pick!? Despite this bombshell revelation, and her tearful pleas, Emily?s dream man walked off the show ? and out of her life.

Whether viewers will get to watch this shocking twist play out on air, is still uncertain. But one thing?s for sure; despite being ditched by her dream man, Emily is now happily engaged and living with the other top contender. An insider, who recently spoke with Emily?s fianc�, said, ?He told me, ?We?re gonna get married, and we?re gonna have kids.??

Kristen Stewart Shops for Engagement Rings

After four years and four blockbuster films, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are ready to take their relationship to the next level.

In Touch has learned that Kristen went shopping at Neil Lane in West Hollywood with a friend in early June and stunned eyewitnesses when she headed straight for the engagement rings!

?She was trying on gold rings with various colored diamonds ? nothing traditional,? one excited onlooker tells In Touch of the 22-year-old Twilight actress.

Kristen used to be in favor of taking ?baby steps,? but a friend of the couple tells In Touch, ?She loves Rob, and she?s finally ready ? an engagement is a logical next step.?

Usher's Stepson, 11, Reportedly Brain Dead

It was a tragic weekend for Usher and his estranged wife, Tameka Foster. The 33-year-old entertainer?s stepson, Kyle Glover, was taken to a hospital in Atlanta after being hit in the head by a personal watercraft on July 6. The 11-year-old was declared brain dead two days later.

Usher and Tameka have reportedly not left the hospital since Kyle was admitted. According to TMZ, there has been no decision yet whether or not to take him off life support.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Usher and his family at this difficult time.

Google Talk Guru answers questions via your IM app

Bots -- like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave -- are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn't have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like "score detroit red wings" or "sushi R3N 1Y1."

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It's well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

ZTE Flash for Sprint leaked with 4.5-inch screen and LTE

Hot on the heels of the recently released Grand X, it looks like ZTE is pairing up with Sprint to launch a new LTE handset, the Flash. As far as specs, it seems to tick all the boxes: a 4.5" 720x1280 display, dual-core 1.5 Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM and a 12.6MP camera. There are just a couple shortcomings at first glance though, mainly the rather small 8GB of storage and 1780 mAh battery, which don't compare favorably to recent top tier handsets like the Evo 4G LTE and Galaxy SIII.

We'll only know for sure when Sprint drops the official release date and pricing on this one. It could be a real contender, and more high-end device competition can only be a good thing.

Hangouts come to Gmail, let you launch virtual meetings from your inbox

Google's been adding a lot of features lately to get us to Hangout, from providing digital moustaches to scheduling virtual soirees. Now, the company's aiming to get folks video conferencing from their inbox. That's right, you can now start a Hangout with up to nine friends or colleagues straight from Gmail with a click of a button. Users can expect better quality as compared to Gmail's old peer-to-peer video chats, and it provides access to people with an Android or iOS device and those on Google+ in a web browser. The new feature has already started making its way to users, and the rollout will continue over the next few weeks. Still not ready to mix your Hangouts with email just yet? Despite early hiccups Apple's latest OS X release was downloaded more than 3 million times during its first 4 days of availability. The $20 upgrade brings a host of new features to compatible Macs including Airplay Mirroring, Game Center, system-wide sharing, and beefed-up iCloud integration, which now syncs iWork documents, notes, and reminders. While Apple doesn't speculate the reason for the huge download numbers, several factors likely led to the quick adoption rate. First, Apple priced OS X 10.8 to move. At only $20, the new operating system is a rather good bargain even if it doesn't boast a lot of new features. Apple also made upgrading to Mountain Lion rather easy, which also likely led to more users jumping onto the system.

Help Bob make money in Sticks, a fun physics game

Sticks is another one of those rare games where the intro is actually worth watching. It introduces you to office worker Bob, who is basically a wage slave fantasizing about a better existence.

Then, on his way back home from another grueling day at the office, he passes a huge sign which says "Sticks." This is where the game starts.

Each level has a number of coins hovering in mid-air, and your goal is to place sticks that lead those coins to Bob -- but you only have a limited amount of wood to play with. As soon as you're done placing your sticks strategically, hit the big Play button and let nature, or rather gravity, run its course. The coins will drop down, and if you place your sticks correctly, they will roll all the way to Bob.

The soundtrack is soothing and playful, and didn't get on my nerves even after playing for quite a while. All in all, a very cute game, especially for a day at the office.
